Not only are editors asking us, but reviewers as well, to prepare a "graphical abstract"!

Indeed, incorporating figures and photos on the website enhances reader comprehension of your paper and increases its accessibility.

Hence, we will make an effort to include "Graphical abstracts" for papers published from 2021 onwards.

Figure. Model for the mechanism of HFD-induced muscle atrophy in SKG/Jcl mice.

An HFD (rich in saturated fatty acids) promotes Th17 cell differentiation of splenocytes. TLR4 in muscle cells is activated both by Th17 cell–derived IL-17 and by saturated fatty acids directly, resulting in activation of the kinase IKK and consequent ceramide biosynthesis. Activation of IKK–NF-κB signaling induces muscle atrophy by increasing transcription of the gene for MuRF-1. TLR4-dependent ceramide production and the accumulation of ceramides derived from saturated free fatty acids interfere with the Akt signaling pathway in muscle cells. Elevated free fatty acid levels also promote insulin resistance and thereby inhibit Akt-mTORC1 signaling. Inhibition of the Akt pathway not only attenuates protein synthesis but up-regulates expression of the ubiquitin ligases atrogin-1 and MuRF-1, resulting in muscle atrophy.

Figure. Chemotherapy with MSG supplementation.

In the present study, we observed that while the first round of chemotherapy (cisplatin only or a combination of cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil) during CRT resulted in a decrease in T1R3 expression levels in the lingual mucosa and taste sensitivity in patients with advanced head and neck cancer, these effects were attenuated by dietary supplementation with MSG during the second round of chemotherapy, as shown in the graphic abstract in Figure.

Sudachi peel extract powder including the polymethoxylated flavone sudachitin improves visceral fat content in individuals at risk for developing diabetes.

Shikishima Y, Tsutsumi R, Kawakami A, Miura H, Nii Y, Sakaue H. Food Sci Nutr. 2021 Jun 15;9(8):4076-4084. doi: 10.1002/fsn3.2339. eCollection 2021 Aug. PMID: 34401059

Figure.

Extracts of Citrus sudachi (sudachi) peel, containing the polymethoxylated flavone sudachitin, have shown promise in vitro and in animal models. Compared with placebo, sudachi peel extract significantly reduced the ratio of visceral fat to subcutaneous fat (−0.0265%, p = .0485), and moderately reduced visceral fat and waist circumference.

Long-chain monounsaturated fatty acids improve endothelial function with altering microbial flora.

Figure. Schematic model of the mechanism through which saury-derived long-chain monounsaturated fatty acids (LCMUFAs) improve endothelial function via the gut microbiota.

In the present study, we found that the gut microbial metabolites produced from LCMUFAs alter the host metabolism and alleviate atherosclerosis (Figure). LCMUFAs improved endothelial function not only in mice but also in humans. LCMUFA-enriched fish oil intake contributed to the improvement in the endothelial functions in humans, and both C20:1 and C22:1 fatty acids from LCMUFAs ameliorated atherosclerosis and showed similar effects on the gut microbiota. In addition, we observed that GLP-1 levels were increased through alterations to the microbial environment, consistent with the increase in Akkermansia and improvement in the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes in mice treated with C20:1 or C22:1, as well as the decrease in TMAO, a CVD prediction marker, in humans treated with LCMUFAs.
